IN the coming weeks, Maritzburg Echo will be publishing the history and profiles of some of the clubs under or have played in the Edendale Football Association (EFA).

This week we take a look at KZN Celtics Football Club.

The team, nicknamed Siwelele sase PMB, was founded by Lindokuhle Ngobese and Sbulelo Ndlovu in 2006 and their home base is in Edendale and Dambuza with manager Dumisani Mofokeng at the helm and Senzo Shange as chairperson.

The coaching staff is Ngobese, Nkosinathi Mkhonza and Vusimuzi Dlamini, with 20 players making up the squad.

The team’s accolades include winning the Dut SDIPE this year, and the Siyabonga Cup, which they won last year and the Edendale Easter Tournament which won in 2015.

The team’s current best performing player is right back Thobani Dlamini, in jersey number 15.

Coach Ngobese said: “His performance has been outstanding and consistent. Dlamini is the type of player that any coach would wish for because he is determined and disciplined.” KZN Celtics finished fourth in the 2017 Super League which they were promoted to in 2016 after finishing fourth on the EFA log.

The Super League gets under way this weekend and the coach said his side is gunning for top spot and promotion to the SAB League.

“Another goal of ours is to see our boys succeed as we have seen others, who have played for our side in the past, make it into the development sides of some of the best PSL teams,” Ngobese said.

He said Siwelele sase PMB has produced players who ply their trade in top flight teams such as Highlands Park, Supersport United, Bidvest Wits, Stars of Africa Academy and Edendale Juventus, which is in the ABC Motsepe League, and includes Siphamandla Ngcobo and Sphelele Mkhulisi.
