RESIDENTS of Pietermaritzburg were treated to a weekend of soccer at Dales Park sports ground in celebration of Youth Day.

The KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC), in partnership with the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation and the South African Police Services hosted the KZNCC Social Cohesion Tournament to promote social cohesion among residents, particularly, foreign nationals.

The four teams that locked horns on Saturday were Movers FC, SAPS FC, African United FC and Super 11 FC, with the latter, Super 11 FC winning the overall tournament with a 2-0 win against African United, taking home a trophy.

The other winning teams received gold medals.

The KZNCC Social Cohesion Tournament was not only aimed at keeping young people away from alcohol and drugs, the organisers used the tournament to call on communities to unite against the on-going violence against women and girl children.

The KZNCC CEO, Dr Douglas Dziva said: “The rights of women should never be violated.

“Through this tournament we managed to teach young adults and the community to learn to love and respect women and girl children as well as people living with albinism.”

This tournament saw a number of key figures attending in support of the initiative, including Councillor Manqoba Ngubeni of Ward 27 who was impressed with the co-ordination of such an event.

“This is the first time I have seen such a good initiative mainly because it renders our foreign nationals a platform to feel included and part of us,” he said.
