MARITZBURG Indoor Football Association’s (MIFA) first round of fixtures ended on October 13, and on October 20 selected teams travelled to Tongaat to compete in the KwaZulu-Natal Futsal Tournament, which was hosted at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre.

The tournament was organised by the KZN Futsal interim executive committee, which is currently headed by Melvyn Odayan, with Tatenda Chadya as the interim secretary.

It was a feast of futsal as 16 teams from Tongaat, Ethekwini, Stanger and Pietermaritzburg took part.

Invitations had, however, gone as far as Ladysmith, Newcastle, Port Shepstone and Richards’ Bay.

After a round robin at the group stages, Stanger’s Kwadukuza, Pietermaritzburg’s Hugo’s United, Pillars and 2 Touch led their respective groups while Pietermaritzburg’s Milan, Tongaat’s Belchester, and Ethekwini’s Charles Glass and Rangers all came second in their groups respectively.

After the last eight were all drawn from the hat, Milan beat Pillars 1-0 in what was a Pietermaritzburg affair while Hugo’s United tumbled 2-0 to Kwadukuza. 2 Touch managed to go past Rangers, who had displayed excellent play at their group fixtures.

Meanwhile in the last quarter final, Tongaat side Belchester walloped Ethekwini’s Charles Glass 4-0. The semi-finals saw Milan come back from a goal down to defeat 2 Touch 2-1 in another heated Pietermaritzburg affair.

Despite lots of resistance, Kwadukuza finally succumbed to a strong Belchester who beat them 3-1.

Belchester was then set for the final and they would battle it out with Milan, who had travelled with only five players, meaning that they had played with no substitutes throughout the tournament. In their home arena, Belchester comfortably won the provincial tournament 4-1 over a thin but very fit Milan.
