LOOKING to get fit and enjoy a day out with the family? Join thousands of fellow South Africans as they take part in the activities of the National Recreation Day and the Big Walk next weekend.

This year, National Recreation Day (NRD) is scheduled to take place on Friday, October 5 and the Annual Big Walk on Sunday, October 7 across all nine provinces.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the National Recreation Day will be celebrated at the Nhlalakahle Sports Grounds in Greytown, in the Midlands, from 8am until around midday, while the Big Walk will be celebrated on October 7 at the Oval Cricket Sports Grounds in Pietermaritzburg.

The day’s programme for the NRD will include a 3km walk, aerobics, children’s activities, fun games for the elderly, football, netball, and indigenous games.

It is an opportunity for all South Africans to get involved in active recreation activities.

The National Recreation Day is a result of a cabinet declaration of 2014, which deems the first Friday of October as National Recreation Day.

The campaign seeks to change the behaviour of all South Africans and their attitude towards healthy living and physical activity.

The targeted audience is the community as well as local public servants.

The Big Walk will include a 5km and 10km fun walks starting at the Oval. There will be fun-filled activities for residents young and old.

People are encouraged to register to participate in both events. Registration forms are obtainable from the local press as well as from the local councils and Department of Sport and Recreation offices at 135 Pietermaritz Street, Pietermaritzburg.

Registration will also be open on the day of the event. — Supplied.
