SASSA is the South Africa Social Security Agency.

Sassa’s role is to administer social grants to categories of people who are ‘vulnerable to poverty and in need of state support’ in order to improve these people’s standard of living.

Who can apply for a Sassa grant?

There is a misconception that only elderly people qualify for Sassagrants. There are in fact multiple categories of people who may apply for a grant. The Social Assistance Act of 2004 and regulations to the act provide the legal framework for the administration of seven social grants. These include the following:

Grants for older persons

Disability grant

War veterans grant

Care dependency grant

Foster child grant

Child support grant

Social relief of distress

How does Sassa assess whether one qualifies for a grant?

Sassaevaluates everyone who applies for a grant by conducting a means test , where they evaluate your income and assets. If you are below the threshold set by government, you qualify for the grant.

The income and assets thresholds set for the means test are as follows:

Assets threshold:

In terms of the current thresholds, a single person should not have assets totaling more than R1 056 000.00, and should not earn more than R 73 800 per year or R 6150.00 per month.

A married person’s joint assets with his/her spouse should not total more than R 2 112 000.00, and their joint income should not be more than R 147 600.00 per year or 12300.00 per month.

The value of the house that a person lives in is not taken into account, regardless of who it belongs to.

It makes no difference if the applicant is married in community of property or out of community of property.

The income of a spouse is taken into account whether you are married in or out of community of property.

If your spouse has deserted you for more than 3 months, your marital status is not taken into account. You need to notify Sassa of the desertion in an affidavit.

It is not possible for a third party to attend upon SASSA to make application for a grant on your behalf. SASSA require the individual to attend upon their offices personally.

In some instances, retirement homes and homes for people with disabilities may make arrangements for SASSA representatives to attend at their home to facilitate the application of a grant.
