ABOUT five Edendale families have been left homeless amid a wet and overcast weekend following an interdict by the Sheriff of the Court.

The families were evicted from their mud houses in the Lay Centre area as, according to court papers, they have been living there unlawfully.

Their houses were destroyed during the course of last week.

One of the affected residents, Mthokozisi Nene, said that they have approached the ward councillor to help them but to no avail.

“We have been living here since 1995 and no one has ever issued us letters saying we are on someone’s property. We have been living here for so long. We thought the land was now ours. What are we going to do now? What will happen to our families?” asked Nene.

Thembi Phoswa said her child has had to skip school because they don’t have a home.

“The bed, which I still pay monthly instalments for, is missing and all my glasses and pots were all over the floor when they kicked us out.

“We don’t know the Sheriff of the Court documents they are talking about and we never signed them acknowledging receiving the letters. We need help,” said Phoswa.

Efforts to get hold of the property owners were unsuccessful as calls rang unanswered.

Edendale ward councillor Pat Jaca said he knows nothing about this issue and that a title deed, which states the rightful owner of the property, is what will protect them from eviction.
