Lethal pothole

2019-11-27 06:01

THE Witness front page of November 18 is almost exclusively concerned with potholes and the decision to stop fixing them.

There is a particular pothole on the new Greytown Road about 300 metres past the turn-off to Raisethorpe that deserves attention. Indeed the only reason why it has not been fixed already must be that nobody knows how to do so.

The problem is that 3/4 of it is a pothole. The remaining 1/4 is an abyss dropping down the hillside to nowhere.

The problem has been made worse recently as a new pothole has started about two metres away. When these two join there will be one big black hole into which all passing traffic will fall.

When the first vehicle falls into this hole there will almost certainly be fatalities. Whoever issued the instruction reported in The Witness will have that on their conscience for the rest of their life.

Recently, local residents have started filling the hole from the underside with rubbish. That won’t fix anything. It needs well-qualified civil engineers to fix this one. Perhaps as Anthony Timms says in his letter of November 18, they “do not care”.
