STREET lights being left on throughout the day and then switched off all night long have left many residents questioning the purpose of the street lights on Rushmore Road, Hayfields.

Residents have complained that when driving through the road at night they have to do so in complete darkness. Motorists thought the globes were burnt out only to find that the lights switched on during the day.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous, said that driving through the road at night is very dangerous given that the road is in complete darkness.

“It’s really unsafe especially at night and what makes it worse is when we are up in the day we see that the lights are on. What is the point of this?” questioned the resident.

Another concerned resident, Rose Smith, said that lights being left on during the day is a complete waste of money.

“How come it’s okay for the municipality to mess up our light bills and charge us extra but leave the lights on throughout the day? Are the residents whose light bills were messed up the ones who are paying for this wastage?” asked Smith.

Questions were sent to the municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha but were unanswered at the time of going to press.
