Listeria hysteria: What do I feed my family?

2018-03-21 06:00

THIS is the question that many homes have had to face since food giants Enterprise and Rainbow, among others, announced a total recall of ready-to- eat goods such as polony, viennas and ham.

Since the news of an outbreak of listeriosis was traced back to an Enterprise factory in Polokwane, many grocery giants such as Woolworths and Pick n Pay have gone on to request consumers to return the goods bought from these stores in fear that they may be carriers of the life-threatening disease.

The deadly food-borne illness in South Africa has been described by the World Health Organisation as the biggest documented outbreak of listeria, leaving many parents without lunchtime staple meals such as hot dogs, polony sandwiches and many more. These quick and convenient lunches are loved by children and parents alike, because they taste good and because they are easily made for those busy bustling weekday mornings.

“As a working mother who needs to be at work at 8 am and still get my children ready and drop them off at school, these products that we have been told to stay away from, served as an easy on-the-go lunch to make while we got ready in the morning,” said Donna Charlene, who questioned what she could do now, besides provide her children with lunch money. Another concerned mum questioned what exactly she could cook for her family now that her food has been in contact with the goods in question given that they were in her fridge.

“We put all our goods in the fridge and we heard that the foods that came into contact with our polony and viennas may also be infected, so what do we do now? Throw it away?” asked mother of two, Sheryl Singh.
