AFTER having a childhood vision that told him he would live to 100, retired police officer Captain Ramsawak Sunker, who will turn 79 this week, is determined to make his vision a reality. In his remaining time he hopes to see religion more widely practised.

“When I was younger, about nine, I had a vision from Jesus Christ and he told me that I would live to see 100,” said Sunker, who humbly admits that he has been a spiritual being from a very young age.

Having started at the police force at a very late stage in his life, at the age of 33, Sunker went on to excel in his role as a policeman, receiving various merits and awards for his contribution to ensuring good service to the people of Pietermaritzburg. Sunker served in the Mountain Rise, Loop Street, and Plessislaer Police Stations.

“I remember it was tough for us but I remained a servant of the people throughout my career. I dedicated my life to the SAPS and even used my private time to do work for the community,” said Sunker, who added that he joined the police to enforce law and to be a friend of the public.

Sunker now spends his days dedicated to a life of spiritual fulfilment and spends hours of his day reading and studying traditional Indian scriptures.

“I recently achieved a 70% pass in one of my scripture tests and will be writing my last test next year February in my quest to live the life of a sanyassa (the life stage of renunciation within the Hindu culture),” said Sunker.

A devoted religious man, Sunker said that he hoped for the future where people would reintroduce spirituality and religion in their lives, regardless of what faith, saying: “I am a self realised, God realised and knower of Brahma and wish that my fellow people would also seek to find God in their lives.”
