TWO Pietermaritzburg men have been selected to star in the upcoming musical Hook or By Crook by multi award-winning actor and director Rajesh Gopi.

The play, which will be performed at Sibaya’s iZulu Theatre in Durban, will feature locals Lyle Chellan, who plays the lead character Manickum Chetty, and Shalen Maharaj as his co-star Porky.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, the two men said they had been pleasantly surprised to receive their roles in the upcoming play after attending auditions for Gopi’s illustrious performance arts learnership programme from which they were some of the few selected.

Landing his first acting role ever, Chellan said to receive the lead role, after taking a chance by auditioning after his wife convinced him, was quite a shock.

“I am used to being on stage due to me being a singer and deejay, but this will be my first ever acting role,” said Chellan.

Maharaj, who has studied the performing arts at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), said that he had learned a lot from working with Gopi.

“I have studied the performing arts and done a few musicals before this but have still learned so much from working with Gopi.

“It has been a brilliant experience because what he teaches is completely different to anything I have learned before,” said Maharaj.

The play which is set against the backdrop of Chatsworth, centres around Chellan’s character Manickum, a former freedom fighter, who hungers to restore the values of the freedom struggle while coming face to face with corrupt political leaders.

“This play packs comedy, drama and love amongst other things and is sure to be a teary affair,” said Chellan.

Maharaj said that people would learn a lot about the struggles and history of Indian people through this play.

The play will be showcased from June 27 to July 8 and bookings can be made via Computicket.
