BEANI Thies of Wartburg Kirchdof High School in KZN won the Youth Women B category at the 2018 Spur Schools MTB League Inter-Schools Final, held at Magaliesberg at the weekend.

In second place was Hijke Coetzee from Nelspruit High in Mpumalanga. Third place went to Simone van Wyk from Lydenberg High School, also in Mpumalanga.

Beani Thies, an outstanding all-round athlete, won her category at the Spur Schools MTB League Inter-Schools Final for the third successive year after being pushed all the way by Hijke and Simone.

She is also a talented downhill mountain biker and was second in the world in the under-19 category at the recent IXS Rookies World Championships held in Austria. The Spur Schools MTB League, now in its 10th year, covers nine South African provinces and takes place from May to October each year. Since its inception, the League has seen over 70 000 entries and participation from over 500 schools.

The league was launched in 2009 by Spur Steak Ranches and Amarider to promote MTB as an official in-school sport, and is currently the biggest Inter-Schools MTB League in the world.
