A YOUNG filmmaker has made the City of Choice proud after she won an award of best IsiZulu Film at the Simon Sabela Awards that were held at the Playhouse in Durban recently.Portia Mncadi won the award for her film, titled Same love, which is her second film.Speaking to Echo, Mncadi said she is delighted especially since this was her first nomination for the awards. She said it’s still hard to believe it since she was up against filmmakers that have already made it big in the film industry.“This is the results of hard work and dedication. It was not easy when I started but now I am starting to see my hard work is paying off,” she said.“I believe that wining this award will help and open more doors for me since I am still a local filmmaker. I will continue to work hard and show other upcoming filmmakers that everything is possible if you dedicate yourself and do it with love.”Mncadi said her winning film was released in July last year and her first is titled Ukhondolo (curse). She said her love for film started when she was still young.“I started writing scripts while in Grade 5. I love writing and I am committed to doing the very best I can to make it in this tough industry.“I even quit my job as a secretary last year at the Department of Agriculture because I wanted to dedicate all my time and my focus into filmmaking. Till today I do not regret making that decision because I am now doing what I love and something that I am passionate about,” she said.Mncadi said her dream is to create a platform for other young filmmakers to enter the industry. She also want to help give young talent a platform to showcase their acting skills in the films that she is going to make.
