Local lifestyle event finds a new venue

THE Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience is an initiative which is aimed at boosting the local economy of the city of Pietermaritzburg.

It is a platform created to support local businesses by giving them an opportunity to showcase their products and services. The event is a market setup which allows businesses in the food, fashion, arts and craft, accessories, beverages, and fresh produce industries to trade. The term Chilla Nathi is a slang term which means “relax with us”.

Initially, when the event started in 2010, the organisers saw a unique opportunity to provide la aid back, picnic setup with entertainment for people in the 21-35yrs age group. It was all about providing organised entertainment for people that hang around the parks and venues where socialites gather.

“After four years of operating as an events company, we realized that the event could be a vehicle that provides an opportunity for businesses to trade while the picnic was underway. This prompted us to consider the evolution of the brand and a shift in thinking where events are concerned. We therefore had to consider changing the name from Chilla Nathi Sessions to Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience in 2017, which was more in line with the new business objectives.

“We have successfully hosted 10 events in Pietermaritzburg. The number of visitors that attend the event has grown to over 1 000 visitors monthly,” said Sbonga Shelembe of the Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience.

“As a family oriented lifestyle event, we are excited about our partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), or Botanical Gardens as we know it. The move from Alexandra Park, Mayor’s Garden to the magnificent Botanical Gardens will ensure that our event stays family oriented.

“Safety has always been a priority for our visitors which is why we did not think twice when SANBI showed interest in our event. The garden provides a space where people can relax and enjoy themselves,” he said.

Now that the event has a permanent home, visitors can expect a relaxed and safe environment with loads of delicious cuisines from different experienced chefs and caterers.

They can also expect an unforgettable shopping experience with fashion, arts, crafts, fashion accessories, beverages, fresh produce, household goods and services offered by different stalls while being entertained by local bands and DJs.

A special food demonstration area will be set up where patrons can participate in the sharing of various recipes with professional chefs.

The Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience is a fun filled day for the whole family where parents can leave their little ones at the Chilla Nathi Kiddies Craft Village, where they will be entertained, while they walk around doing some shopping.

Other important news worth sharing is the new partnership with WILDLANDS, a local environmental NPO making a sustainability difference in a number of communities in South Africa.

WILDLANDS has networks in 60 communities across KwaZulu-Natal, Western, Northern and Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng, transforming the lives of thousands of South Africans and improving their livelihoods through innovative sustainable programs.

These programs enable small business development, food security, conservation, recycling and restoration efforts, and offer a variety of experiential learning opportunities that provide tangible ways to activate sustainability with a focus on education, training and ambassadorship. The partnership with WILDLANDS is centred around the WILDLANDS #GOGREEN initiative. #GOGREEN is a waste management plan that offers a sustainable solution to collecting waste generated during events. This means that WILDLANDS will be visible at our events, educating people on recycling, and how they can assist the event in reducing its environmental footprint. Recycling stations will be set up at strategic points at the event where people will access them to dispose of their waste. All the waste will be separated and recycled at the WILDLANDS Recycling depot in Howick.

The Chilla Nathi Cookout Experience is all about growing and supporting small businesses by providing the following:

• An unlimited opportunity to realise sales on the day;

• The possibility of growth through future sales, whether from referrals or the audience attending & our social media platforms that we have available for them;

• An opportunity to sharpen business practices, networking and business growth.

Through our partnerships with government, private sector, NPO’s and state owned entities, we plan to strengthen our enterprise development wing which will provides mentorship and capacity building programmes.
