TWENTY-year-old Noluthando Dlamini from Willowfontein, KwaPhupha area, will represent Pietermaritzburg at the second annual Miss Durban Varsities pageant, being held at the BAT Centre, Durban, on August 24.

Dlamini, who also holds the title of Miss Greater Edendale Mall 2017, is one of 12 women that will compete for the crown.

The first year student at Boston College in Pietermaritzburg told Echo that she is very confident that she will bring the title home.

“I am very excited about this pageant. I cannot wait for the day of the event so that I can make my city proud. I know that competitions are tough but I am not scared,” she said.

She said she entered the competition after one of her friends sent her a poster on Whatsapp. She said she did not hesitate, entering right away.

“I went for auditions and I went through to the finals. I was very nervous when they were about to announce the finalists but I hoped that I would make it through and I did.

“I was born for modelling. I love it and I have a passion for it. Even though I am studying, I consider modelling as my first choice. I am studying because I need something to fall back on if things don’t go well for me with modelling because this is a tough industry where you need to make your mark in order to survive.”

Dlamini said she started entering modelling competitions when she was still in grade one. She said, at the time, she did not know what modelling entailed and just did it because she wanted to look beautiful and walk on a ramp.

“In 2015 I realised that there is more to modelling besides looking pretty in heels and walking on a ramp. It teaches you about confidence, how to behave as a young woman and it also pushes you to want to do good things for the community as well,” she ended.
