BEAUTY alone will not suffice because beauty and brains are the key combination to survival and attaining success.

That is what local model Lungile Ngcobo, who will take part in Miss World Universities in August this year believes.

Ngcobo earned the Miss SA Campus title last year.

“Being beautiful is not enough if you want to make it in the modelling industry. Education is important, which is why my advice to young girls, who want to start modelling is - educate yourself because your walk and your looks alone do not work in this day and age,” Ngcobo said.

The 25-year-old, who started modelling in 2015, was first crowned Miss Durban University of Technology 2016 qualifying her for Miss SA Campus in January.

She said balancing being a beauty queen and completing her B-tech studies is a difficult aisle to walk down, she has found a way to manage.

“I’m a career driven person. I’m planning to complete a PhD before being completely satisfied with my level of education.”

She said her studies are her priority and one of the challenges with juggling schooling and her modelling comes when she has to take part in competitions.

“So I only take part in three competitions each year to save myself the stress of finding a way to manage school and modelling,”

Ngcobo completed a diploma in entrepreneur and management studies.

Another title to her name is the 2015 Miss KZN Top Model.

“Doing well in an international competition would be a dream come true,” she said.
She said her circumstances have not been rosy leading to a modelling career peppered with challenges that stem from a lack of funds.

“My parents are unemployed, so for shoes and other accessories I have to save the little money I get to ensure I can buy the things I need.”

Modelling and an extensive academic record are not her only interests or goals, however.

“Being a motivational speaker is something I would like to do. I’ve gone through a lot and there’s a lot I could do to change young people’s lives just by telling my story,” she said.

Her word of advice to young and aspiring models is that since the model industry is fraught with many temptations, they should avoid falling into these traps and stay true to themselves by doing it for the love.

“I’m honoured I will be representing my country on an international stage, but I’m also under a lot of pressure to do well,” she said.

Ngcobo is also the ambassador for Hoyt Model Management.
