GUGULETHU Mkhize from the Shange area in Henly is fighting for her life at the Edendale Hospital after the father of her children allegedly shot her three times last Friday evening.

Mkhize’s mother, Ntombi, said a bullet was lodged in her daughter’s spinal cord and she was also wounded in both thighs and an arm.

“I visited her at the hospital on Sunday before she was taken for an operation, she could barely talk because she was in critical condition,” Ntombi said.

She said the incident allegedly occurred on Friday at 8.30pm outside the family home.

“I do not know what led him to shoot my daughter, but I know he is very abusive,” Ntombi said.

Ntombi said the suspect was arrested after her son, Nkululeko, alerted the police about the shooting.

“When my son heard gunshots he ran outside to check on his sister, but as he ran out he [the suspect] shot at my son, but fortunately he missed.

He tried to shoot my son three times, but on the fourth occasion, the gun jammed,” Ntombi said.

She said Nkululeko fought with and managed to subdue the suspect, before the Taylors Halt SAPS were called to the scene. KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said: “We can confirm that a 43-year-old suspect was arrested for the attempted murder of a 21-year-old woman. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.”
The suspect was due in court on Monday. At the time of going to press the outcome of his court appearance was unavailable.
