March set for Saturday

2018-06-20 06:00

VOICES of Pietermaritzburg (VOP) Facebook group have urged all members and residents of Pietermaritzburg against violence towards women and children to join them in a peaceful march this Saturday, starting from the Unisa, Langalibalele Street through town, to stand up for the lives of those affected by violence.

VOP is a Facebook group with volunteers from all over Pietermaritzburg, and in partnership with NGO Grace Nations, have decided that enough is enough, birthing the idea of the #PietermaritzburgSaysNo campaign.

“It is a reality that rape and violence against women and children is rife. It is an epidemic and we have decided to talk with our feet.

“We have to show those who have no voice that the community will stand up and support them.

“We have to tell those who choose to silence others that our voices are louder. Violence does not discriminate over colour, creed or social standing and our aim is to show that we stand as one,” said VOP volunteer Deidre deWee.

VOP has stated that everyone, regardless of race or creed, should join in and added that everyone is affected by these tragedies and therefore need to be part of the #PietermaritzburgSaysNo movement by showing up and wearing a red or white shirt which symbolises the blood spilt.

Many organisations have partnered with the cause such as ChillaNathi, Msunduzi Municipality, Department of Social Development, Gijima Printers and Norma’s Driving School.

“We invite people who are joining us to bring posters and banners in memory of a loved one or bearing a message you want seen,” said deWee.

For more information contact Deidre deWee on 065 253 4746 or Bella Gushs on 062 410 2820 or respond to one of the VOP Facebook posts.
