WHEN he started playing chess he lost 24 games in a row, but that only made him more determined to succeed.

Now, Malibongwe Kheswa (16) been selected to represent his school and Umgungundlovu District in chess at the Salga Games 2017 at King Cetshwayo Stadium in December.

The Grade 10 at Maritzburg College pupil won at district level recently, elevating him to provincial level.

Malibongwe told Maritzburg Fever he is excited and nervous because there is a lot of pressure on him but he is ready.

“I love and enjoy chess and am hoping to do well.

“I started playing chess in Grade 7, but when I got to high school I stopped.

“I only started playing again last year [Grade 9],” he said.

Besides being a chess champion, Malibongwe is also one of the school’s top rugby players.

His chess coach Bernice Borain said Malibongwe is one of the top chess players at school.

“We are proud of him.

“It is great that Malibongwe is number one.

“He always performs well and has played against many good players, and wins,” said Borain.
