Maritzburg seek to extend unbeaten run and pick up more points

EIGHT is not enough for Maritzburg United. Eric Tinkler’s fired-up team did extremely well to oust Chiefs from the Telkom Knockout on Sunday and extend their unbeaten run to eight matches, but they have to quickly change focus to league business and reach a chosen points target by the Christmas break.

Further increasing their hot sequence of results is now the challenge, starting with tomorrow’s clash against tough-to-crack SuperSport United in the Absa Premiership at Harry Gwala Stadium, according to the cock-a-hoop local outfit.

Currently in eighth place on the 16-team log table, the “Team of Choice” tackle four league matches, two at home and two away, plus the exciting “TKO” final against Mamelodi Sundowns before the year ends.

Said the club’s chuffed boss Farook Kadodia yesterday: “Us being in the Cup final is good for our brand, good for the city, good for the province and good for social cohesion.

“It was really thrilling to beat Chiefs with almost 40 000 fans screaming for them on Sunday, but that’s now history and we need to focus on the league, which is more important.

“We have two tough matches this week, against SuperSport and AmaZulu, and need to continue to pick up important points.

“We have 13 points on the log at present and would like that to be at least 20 by the Christmas break.”

After tomorrow’s assignment against Kaitano Tembo’s third-placed SuperSport, Tinkler’s men travel to Durban on Sunday to face Usuthu and then trek to Polokwane the following Sunday, December 8, for a clash with Polokwane City.

The Cup final comes six days later on December 14 in Durban and their last match of the year will be on Sunday, December 22, against Chiefs at home.

In addition to their high morale, Tinkler has got Durban-born defenders Kwanda Mngonyama and Siyanda Xulu back from suspension and injury respectively in the squad to face the coach’s former side SuperSport tomorrow.

However, midfielder Keagan Buchanan is now suspended for having picked up his fourth yellow card on Sunday in Nelspruit, according to Kadodia.
