Maritzburg to host Highlands

2019-10-30 06:00

MARITZBURG United will face Highlands Park FC at home in the quarter-finals of the Telkom Knockout (TKO), while Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates.

This was confirmed during the TKO quarter-final draw that was conducted on Tuesday night at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London after the Chippa United and Bloemfontein Celtic last-16 match.

Chippa secured the final spot in the Telkom Knockout quarter-finals after defeating Celtic 1-0 in their first win of the 2019/2020 season. New Chippa coach Norman Mapeza made only two changes to the side that narrowly lost to Bidvest Wits in the league, with Mzikayise Mashaba and Gregory Damons getting a run, while Siwelele made four variations that included two strikers — Harris Tchilimbou and Victor Letsoalo.

The game started at a frantic pace, although the sides could not create clear openings for large periods of the opening half.

Siwelele eventually carved out a chance to break the deadlock on the half-hour mark after being awarded a free-kick from the edge of the box, but Ndumiso Mabena’s curling free-kick was parried away by goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb.

The Chilli Boys also had an opportunity to find the breakthrough with five minutes remaining of the first stanza after striker Rhulani Manzini latched onto a through ball at the near post but his poked shot hit the side-netting.

The opening exchanges of the second stanza produced fireworks but Chippa came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute after Boikanyo Komane rattled the crossbar with a powerful effort from distance.

Mapeza’s charges eventually broke the deadlock with 12 minutes remaining thanks to Lehlogonolo Masalesa, who found the back of the net with a header inside the box from Tercious Malepe’s corner.

The Team of Choice progressed to the last eight of the competition when they knocked out 2017 TKO champions Bidvest Wits 3-1 on penalties after the sides played to a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Eric Tinkler’s men are eager to proceed to the semi-finals of the competition but their focus at the moment will be on their tough Absa Premiership assignment against Cape Town City on Friday.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 8 pm at Cape Town Stadium and the local side will be looking to stretch their winning streak to four matches while City are searching for their first win in eight matches in all competitions.
