MARITZBURG United have shown heaps of line-up changes during their six Absa Premiership assignments of 2019/20 and this will again be the case when they host the equally-desperate Baroka outfit at Harry Gwala Stadium tonight.

The latest tinkering of the under-performing “Team of Choice” by pressured coach Eric Tinkler did the trick in last Friday’s much-desired victory over Chippa United, but there remain injury and tactical issues that warrant further shuffling of players this evening.

In addition to one or two men not performing as well as the rest on Friday night on home soil, where Thabiso Kutumela thundered in the game’s lone goal after a penalty miss by debutant Jeremy Brockie, Tinkler says central midfielder Phumlani Ntshangase has been ruled out of his side’s tricky date with Baroka.

This is due to limited recovery on the groin injury that the diminutive player picked up while being among the latest changes to the starting X1 for the Chippa clash.

The former Bidvest Wits campaigner has joined fellow midfielder Miguel Timm and defender-cum-wingback Kwanda Mngonyama in United’s casualty ward.

Tinkler won’t divulge how many changes are set to be made by him altogether in his team’s bid for a second consecutive “three-pointer” today, but is hopeful that the replacements will prove their worth.

“It is important for us to win, especially because it’s a home game. Yes, we weren’t at our best in the second half against Chippa on Friday, so we will want to do well in both halves this time. Having said that, Baroka play good football and I thought they were unlucky to lose to Chiefs at the weekend, so we have a good challenge in front of us. We have to make changes again, but I think we have enough depth in our squad to make up for the unavailable players.

“Miguel, Kwanda and Phumlani are all key players. A coach always wants his best players available, but at the same time it’s a chance for those players coming in to show their worth, as was the case against Chippa on Friday,” he said,

Midfield workhorse Mxolisi Kunene was among Tinkler’s changes for the encounter with Chippa and the 28-year-old from Newcastle delivered a standout performance to help his desperate team secure their much-needed win.

Tinkler and the fans alike will hope for more of the same from Kunene, Dan Morgan and others tonight.
