MARITZBURG United’s newly head coach, Ernst Middendorp, is confident that his team can avoid the dreaded relegation axe at the end of the season.

The German tactician, who joined the Team of Choice for the third time last week after walking out of the Free State Stars camp, said the current situation is not new to him.

“There’s nothing new to me. I’ve been in situations like this before with Maritzburg United and we managed to save ourselves at the end of the season. I also did it with other teams in the PSL, most of you guys know that.”

Middendorp says he believes in his players, but it must remembered that it won’t be a walk in the park he said. He asks the experienced senior players to take responsibility for leading the team.

“To change the current situation or position won’t be easy, but it’s possible and we can do it. It’s going to take a whole team effort. Also senior players will have to come to the party and lead from the front,” said Middendorp.

The Team of Choice are still on the log with only one victory, having scored just nine and conceding 24 goals, in 12 fixtures thus far.

On Sunday the Team of Choice will travel to Peter Mokaba Stadium to face SuperSport United.

Middendorp believes there are a lot of players in United’s camp that can change the fortunes, but they have to double up their efforts.

He pointed out that he would like to make a couple of new signings, but it will depend what or who is available in the market.

“It’s a tough one. Clubs, especially those that will be taking part in the CAF competitions, won’t release or loan their players.”

Against SuperSport United, the Team of Choice head will pin his hopes on Evans Rusike, Mohammed Anas, Ashley Hartog and Kurt Lentjies if he is fully fit as his presence will be very influential.
