LAST Sunday Maritzburg United finally made their diehard Pietermaritzgburg fans happy by collecting maximum points when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in the Free State.

United players looked brave, focused, and not suffering from stage fright in front of the intimidating Celtic fans, and they played with purpose from the onset.

At one stage of the game many thought the visitors were going to bow to pressure by the host team. Overall the hosts had the better chances, but some wasteful finishing left them pointless after Pogiso Sanoka struck for the Pietermaritzburg side 17 minutes before the final whistle.

United head coach Ernst Middendorp after the game said it was not a fantastic game, but was happy just to register a win.

The German tactician said one win means something, not a lot, and more hard work is needed.

Middendorp said the only tool that will save or change the current situation in the camp will be to double the efforts in all departments in the field of play.

“We still have a long way to go. To register our first win against Celtic may mean that we are heading to the right direction.

“We know it will take a lot of hard work and we need to win to collect more points in order to move from the relegation zone.”

United communications manager Brian Zuma says collecting maximum points means they finally turned the corner.

“We were desperate to win a game in order to be motivated for the rest of the season.

“Our first win meant a lot to everybody and currently the mood is totally different,” said Zuma.

Middendorp’s side welcomed Bidvest Wits at Harry Gwala Stadium yesterday. There was no result at the time of going to print.

United’s next league fixture will be on 11 March at 8pm at Harry Gwala Stadium against Lamontville Golden Arrows.
