Maritzburg United to make history for KwaZulu-Natal

2018-05-23 06:01

A NEW dawn in local soccer circles has finally arrived. The only Pietermaritzburg PSL outfit and the pride of the City of Choice, Maritzburg United is expected to make history for the entire KwaZulu- Natal province, especially for Pietermaritzburg, on Saturday.

The Team of Choice will lock horns with Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday at Cape Town Stadium (7 pm kick off).

A win against Stars will not only bring the unpredictable Nedbank Cup for the first time in the Zulu Kingdom and in the KZN’s capital city, but will also confirm participation in the next year’s Caf Confederation Cup.

Tickets are already on sale as from last week.

They are available at TicketPro outlets, which include Edgars, Edgars active, Edgars connect, Jet, Jet Mart, Postnet and CNA.

They are selling at R40 for adults and R15 for children under 12.

Most of the local regular faces in United’s matches and die-hards feels it’s their turn to celebrate and it will be done in style.

One of the local number one supporters, Vuyo Mkhize, from Sobantu, says the Pietermaritzburg outfit had an outstanding season and will wrap it up with a trophy.

“Our team was one of the best ones in the PSL for the entire season. Our head coach, Fadlu Davids, brought in a new lease on life in the camp. He was the best coach this season and honestly we deserve some silverware to top it all,” said Mkhize.

Another familiar face in the stands and in the blue-and-white brigade, Pam Ntuli, says United are going to Cape Town to play for a win and bring home the Nedbank Cup title.

Ntuli also feels the entire team would like to win in order to honour late player Luyanda Ntshangase, who was buried last Thursday.

“As passionate supporters of Maritzburg United and proud residents of this city, we are behind our team all the way.

“We are going out there to make history by winning in style and bring the trophy to Maritzburg. A trophy will also mean a good send-off and honour for Luyanda Ntshangase ” said Ntuli.

Former United’s goalkeeper and Namibian-born Virgil Vries, now with Baroka FC, says his former team-mates were just a marvel to watch this season and they deserve the highest prize to crown it all.

“Personally Maritzburg United was one of the best sides in the league this season. They played well for the entire season and are standing a good chance to win the Nedbank Cup on Saturday,”said Vries.

Msunduzi Municipality mayor Themba Njilo wished the local side good luck and he knows very well that United will make the City of Choice proud.

Mshwathi Municipality mayor Sphindile Zondi said United will outsmart their opponents.

“Maritzburg United is set to make history and will win 2-1,”he said.

The Team of Choice will be taking part in their first ever final while Ea Lla Koto last progressed to a final in 1999, when they were beaten by Sundowns in the Rothmans Cup.

Both sides will be looking to win their first piece of silverware in the PSL era.

The PSL and Nedbank are rolling out a promotion that will see the first 10 000 people to purchase a Nedbank Cup ticket get an extra ticket for free.

Maritzburg United are not the only side that made history for their city and province; another KwaZulu-Natal’s representative in the PSL, Lamontville Golden Arrows, last weekend qualified for the next season’s MTN Top 8.

AmaZulu missed out on a top-eight spot after Ajax Cape Town were automatically relegated after being docked points.
