Maritzburg United to soldier on

2016-11-02 06:01

MARITZBURG United is expected to forget their recent upsetting or short-lived Telkom Knockout (TKO) campaign when they get back to league fixtures.

The Team of Choice lost 4-2 to Kaizer Chiefs last Saturday at FNB via penalty shoot-out after playing a goalless draw full and after extra time.

United showed character and were on song from the first whistle. They were also able to create a handful of chances, but failed to convert any.

The soccer gods forgot about United because in some instances the referee somehow dished out some controversial decisions against them and were a bitter pill to swallow by the United technical bench and head coach Ernst Middendorp.

It is now official, the Team of Choice is out as far as the TKO is concerned.

United players should not be disappointed about their performance against the Soweto giants because it was just on point and proved wrong a lot doomsayers.

United communications manager Brian Zuma says unfortunately, their TKO campaign is now over, and they must concentrate on their KwaZulu-Natal derby against Lamontville Golden Arrows tomorrow, Friday at 7.30pm at Harry Gwala Stadium.

“Well it was a sad way to be knocked out, but we are now concentrating on our next league game against Arrows.

“It is going to be a difficult one as always, but we are happy we are playing at home.

We are expecting KZN soccer lovers, especially our home fans, to pack the stadium. Our aim is to redeem ourselves against our next visitors, unfortunately it’s Arrows.

“We are also glad because the team gave a good performance,” said Zuma.

Arrows head coach Clinton Larsen told Echo this week that their clash against United is always tight, exciting and likely to produce endless fireworks.

“It’s going to be a good game, and expect anything,” said Larsen.

Another important fixture expected to bring Mzansi to a standstill will be between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 3pm at FNB Stadium.
