BORN and bred in KwaSwayimane, maskandi artist Zikane Shangase has been chosen to represent uMgungundlovu District in the maskandi competition that will be held at Durban ICC on October 21.

He will then head to Mpumalanga on October 22 where he will be also be representing uMgungundlovu.

This is after he won the best newcomer award at the Maskandi Awards held in Cato Ridge recently. Shangase did not only walk away with an award but he also won R25 000.

Speaking to Echo, Shangase said he is ready to represent uMgungundlovu District and he will do his best to make the city proud.

“I am so excited about this. It has always been my dream to make the area I am coming from and my city proud. Now this is my opportunity to do that,” he said.

Shangase said he started singing in 2008 and he has since released two albums.

“I grew up in rural areas where everyone was playing maskandi music. I fell in love with it as I was growing up. I started writing my own songs and that is where I realised that I have a talent.

“Music is my life, it is my first love. My second album titled Ivukane Uwena was released in May this year. It has 11 songs and all of them are giving a different message because I want to use my music to teach and encourage people, especially young people.

“I do not want to entertain only. I believe that God gave me this talent on purpose, that is why I want to use it for the good use.”

Shangase said his dream is to hep other up-and-coming maskandi artists in his area.

He said he has already started with one group called AmaSwayimane Amahle as they are busy with their first album.

His album is available in all music stores.
