THIS year’s Spur Merchiston Tag Rugby Festival was again widely attended by Pietermaritzburg residents, over 450 pupils and parents. This indicates how active this community is and how sport is an integral part of their lives.

Spur Steak Ranches’ mandate is to promote an active and healthy lifestyle among children and the festival was a clear indication of this.

Most of the children who took part had attended the previous events and this is testament to the need for corporates such as Spur Steak Ranches, to make an investment in school sports, as well as Merchiston Preparatory School’s organisational skills.

Tag rugby is a fun and safe form of non-contact rugby whereby boys and girls play alongside and against each other. This game encourages the fundamental skills required for rugby at a later stage and also introduces girls to the game in a fun and safe manner.

Very little infrastructure is required for the game to get going and coaching the game is very simple. Spur Steak Ranches knew that this format would be the best way to roll out skills development and all-gender participation.

Spur received good support from the moms and dads at the outdoor vending setup as burgers were eaten all day long.

Thank you to all the parents who supported this event, and the Merchiston Preparatory School staff for running the event so successfully.
