METER taxi owners in Pietermaritzburg have amalgamated to launch an association that aims to ensure the safety of their passengers.

The Midlands Meter Taxi Association was officially launched at Coconut Grove in Northdale last Wednesday.

The association comprises six executive members, namely Brandon George (secretary) Muhammad Khan (chairperson), Nazeer Khan (public relations officer), Jalaal Essack (deputy secretary) Rusty Rajcoomar (deputy chairperson), and Goolam Mia (treasurer).

The association currently has eight individual companies involved and about 120 cars that are ready to transport Pietermaritzburg citizens.
