MAMELODI Sundowns midfielder Sphelele “Pitso” Mkhulise says it is important to go back where you come from and thank the people who were there for you when you were still finding your feet and deciding what you want to do regarding your career.

Mkhulise (23) who is originally from Herwood in Caluza was speaking to Echo after he visited his former high school, Edendale Technical and Vocational High School last Wednesday.

Mkhulise who joined Sundowns’ first team last year brought his signed and framed football jersey from Sundowns for the school to keep.

He said he felt it was important for him to go back to the school because that is where his career as a soccer player started.

“When I was still in primary school I used to play soccer but it was not something that I took seriously until I got to high school.

“That is where I realised my talent and started taking it seriously. The teachers from this school were there for me and encouraged me.

“This was my way of showing my appreciation, thanking them and letting them know that I have not forgotten them and the good things that they taught me while I was still their student,” he said.

Mkhulise said it was always his dream to play for a bigger team like Sundowns when he was still growing up. He said he believes that respect and discipline are some of the things that got him where he is today.

“If you want to succeed in this industry you need to focus but most importantly you need to have respect and discipline.

“You need to respect the coaches as well. Do not give up, follow your dreams and one day your dreams will come true.”

Mkhulise joined Sundowns’ junior team in 2016.

He played for Black Leopards and Richards Bay on loan before he was signed for Sundowns senior team last year.
