THE Mama Ntombi Community Project (MNCP), spearheaded by Pietermaritzburg resident Sandra Pillay, recently honoured all the elderly women of the Ezinkhethini township by hosting a luncheon on Thursday.

“The grandmothers are the backbone of our nation and especially so in these townships.

They care for so many orphaned and/or abandoned grandchildren in the community on such meagre financial means and they never complain,” said Pillay.

Pillay said whenever they visit the grandmothers of the township, where they are currently embarking on an educational and feeding scheme project through MNCP, they are always taken aback by the warmth of the people from there.

“Whenever we visit them they are always so warm, welcoming and have the biggest of smiles when they see us. It is so touching to know that whatever little we do for them is received with such immense gratitude,” said Pillay.

One day, one of the grannys shared her story with those in attendance, speaking on her life and the things she has done while embarking on her journey through life.

Gogo Ntshangase, who is still going strong at 106 years old, shared her zest for life with the crowd, telling the people of her love for gardening and looking after her loved ones who she houses.

“I love spending time in my garden and taking care of the needs of my loved ones,” said the spirited Ntshangase.

Those in attendance were also treated to a gospel message from the young pastor Khumalo and were supplied with a meal for the day.
