ORGANISERS of the Midmar Mile were able to claim a “wonderful sporting achievement” over the weekend while putting the succesful event to bed.

They were thrilled to report that a very high percentage of entrants actually completed the challenge at Midmar Dam in Howick at the weekend. This is not always the case for sports events, including the Midmar Mile.

“We had some 12 040 finishers!” race director Wayne Riddin said proudly yesterday while clearing up the space used for the swimming jamboree on Saturday and Sunday. Event spokesperson Graham Daniel added that “everyone got across the dam safely, except one person.”

That was a senior male whose asthma held him back on Saturday and required him to be withdrawn from the water, which was done safely, according to Daniel.

“We had about 12 700 online entries and less than a 1 000 late entries for the Midmar Mile.

“Of those almost 13 700 entries, more than 12 000 actually finished the race. That was a very good number of finishers, close to 90% of all entries. That does not happen very often. It’s something really good for us.”
