Msunduzi emerging events organiser forum formed

IN a bid to contribute to the development of emerging events organisers within the capital city, Msunduzi Tourism has facilitated the formation of the forum for emerging events co-ordinators and organisers.

According to the CEO of Msunduzi Tourism, Dumisani Mhlongo, the formation of the forum followed the last meeting between themselves and events co-ordinators where it was agreed that the only way emerging events hosts can achieve some level of growth is through a structure that will work with different stakeholders including the municipality, government at large, events compliance bodies as well as other relevant sectors including well-established event coordinators, various business bodies and the community of Pietermaritzburg at large.

“The diversification of challenges between emerging and established organisers warranted us to slightly focus on those who are emerging with a view of striking a balance not only in terms of support and development but also enforcement of compliances as well as organisation of events from both wings,” concludes Mhlongo.

In order to steer the ship the forum on Thursday last week established an interim committee that will assist with the smooth take off of this body which is expected among other things to champion the needs and challenges of emerging events co-ordinators.

The committee consist of well-known emerging events co-ordinators and other role-players within the industry. Tasked with leading various subcommittees such as finance and admin, mobilisation and recruitment, compliance and skills development as well as communication and stakeholder relations, the interim committee is made up of Sbonga Shelembe, Zazi Nxele, Sifiso Simelane, Lwazi Nsele, Mondli Biyela, Zanele Dlamini, Pretty Olifant, Busi Shelembe, Sandile Khuboni, Wonder Mvelase and Zama (ex officio).

The committee sat for the first time last Thursday and resolved that the key three urgent tasks facing the committee are recruitment and mobilisation of more members, the development and capacity building of emerging events co-ordinators and the challenging of old apartheid bylaws that subsequently form a massive red tape making it extremely difficult if not impossible for organisers to grow and thrive.

According to the forum spokesperson, Zazi Nxele, the forum will be radical in nature with a view of speedily bringing together all relevant stakeholders especially those with either the mandate and/or the responsibility of ensuring transformation and radical economic transformation to urgently play their role in and (to be precise) doing their jobs.

The committee has set itself a short term goal of uniting emerging events co-ordinators to start working together rather than seeing themselves as competitors which often lead to events overlaps and repetitions.

The committee will also be setting up a peer review mechanism which will enforce organisers to be more compliant, professional and effective in the hosting of events avoiding disappointment and embarrassments.

In closing Nxele said the forum welcomes the development that seeks to save Msunduzi Municipality through the appointment of the administrator and they are very keen in working closely with the administrator to get the municipality on board.

Events organisers wishing to join the forum are welcome to contact the forums co-ordinator Lwazi Nsele on 061 470 5397 or visit Msunduzi Tourism.
