KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has offered his deepest sympathies to the family of Cacisile Gumede (34), a data capturer from the Msunduzi Clinic in Cato Ridge, who was allegedly shot dead by a builder, on Saturday night, following a dispute.

In a video that has sent shock waves over social media, Mozambican builder Sdu Sitole was filmed on a street at Umlazi on Sunday, in an apparently dazed state, firing his gun indiscriminately in public before putting it to his head and shooting himself. He subsequently collapsed and died.

It is believed that this video was filmed just hours after he had shot Gumede at her Cato Ridge home.

Sitole had, for some time, been building a house for the Gumede family, but there are scant details as to what could have led to the shooting.

Gumede, a mother of two children aged 12 and seven, was at home with her sister and one of her colleagues when she was shot.

Gumede’s colleagues and management of Msunduzi Clinic have expressed their shock at the incident. They described Gumede as a dedicated and hardworking member of the team.

“She was a very kind person… very quiet, but flexible and easy to work with. She had very good communication skills and would not hesitate to call you to order if she felt you were straying from the path,” said a colleague who asked not to be named.

Reacting to the incident, MEC Dhlomo said: “We are shocked and extremely saddened by this incident, which comes at a time when our Honourable Premier Willies Mchunu is spearheading a series of prayers around the province to ask for divine intervention to put an end to social ills, including the murder of innocent and defenceless women.

“Since July is Men’s Month, we are also highlighting the need for men to take action against women abuse.

“We wish to offer our deepest condolences to Ms Gumede’s family, colleagues and friends and, of course the family of the perpetrator, whom we are told is from Mozambique, because a sudden and unexpected tragedy such as this one must be devastating for both sides.

“We pray that the Lord Jesus Christ extends His hand above these families to give them all the strength that they need during this difficult time,” Dlomo said.
