MSUNDUZI Municipality Mayor Themba Njilo officially handed over a new fire fighting fleet to the Msunduzi Fire and Rescue Services last Wednesday.

The fleet cost R4.5 million and came with specialised equipment worth R800 000.

Njilo said he hopes that this fleet will be of great help in dealing with fires around the Pietermaritzburg area.

“I am pleased that an essential resource has been purchased for the Emergency Service Unit.

“As the Msunduzi Municipality, we will continue our mandate to enhance service delivery in all spheres of our operation for the benefit of the people we serve.

“Our plan is to replace at least one fleet per year for the next five years.

“Now that we have managed to purchase a new one, I would like to urge everyone to please take care of it so that it can last longer,” he said.

Billy Paton, who is the Chief Fire Officer, told Echo that this fire fleet will come in very handy to the rescue service.

“It is very important that we have at least two reserved fleets just in case the one we have is broken or needs a service. This is something that we are hoping for in the next five years.

“We are very grateful to Msunduzi and new fire fleet will make our job much better now,” he said.
