HE is young, ambitious and his hard work of tirelessly putting events aligned with Msunduzi municipality on the map has earned him accolades.

Msunduzi Municipality’s acting coordinator for marketing and communication Lungelo Sithole was one of many municipal employees recognised recently for their outstanding performance and dedication in servicing the residents of the city.

The 29-year-old from Imbali was recognised in the Best frontline service delivery employee of the year and the Best-implemented project of the year categories, respectively.

In the latter, Sithole was applauded for his enormous contribution in promoting the Mandela Day marathon brand which in 2016 attracted more than 16 000 participants.

Speaking to the Maritzburg Echo, an ecstatic Sithole said he was honoured to be recognised.

“It means a lot to be recognised before reaching 10 years of services in the municipality. The awards mean that people are taking note of my hard work and it’s being appreciated. I am on the right path and it’s encouraging me to strive to be better at my job.”

Sithole joined the municipality in 2007 as a human resources management intern but was later approached by then mayor to take up the position of an admin assistance in his office.

“When that door for me to be an admin assistance opened, I was presented with many other opportunities and along the way realised my passion for promoting and marketing different brands within the municipality. I was more excited when Umgungundlovu District municipality approached me to come up with a marketing strategy for the Mandela Day marathon. That opportunity tested my capabilities and opened me up to a different space.”

The charismatic Sithole said he has worked on numerous other projects sponsored by the municipality including the Msunduzi rising talent, the Tsogo Sun sprint, and the Pietermaritzburg Jazz festival.

Also, passionate about broadcasting, Sithole also occasionally works as a guest presenter on SABC 1’s edutainment show Selimathunzi but he says servicing Msunduzi municipality residents is his first priority.

“I think being the only candidate to be nominated twice for the awards should serve as encouragement for other municipal employees. I think the important thing is to know what your job is and strive to do it well. Your hard work will not go unnoticed, you will get the recognition, and it’s just a patience game.”
