A 29-YEAR-OLD suspect accused of a murder in Sweetwaters on the weekend appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Phindungiphe Mpangase appeared briefly, and the case was postponed to 11 July for a formal bail application.
His arrest follows the murder of Sanele Zondi (20) on Saturday morning, who was stabbed after an argument at a tavern in Kwa- Nxamalala. Zondi later died in hospital.
Plessislaer Police Station spokesperson, Captain Musa Ntombela said the suspect was arrested on Saturday morning after a tavern brawl that left three injured and one dead.
“When the suspect was questioned by police he said he was on his way home from the tavern when he noticed four men following him.
He said they tried to attack him and rob him of his belongings and he fought back and stabbed them.”
Ntombela said the suspect then fled the scene and went home and told his father what had happened and his father took him to the police station.
