THE five winning pupils of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum’s Robben Island Museum Spring School Camp 2019 were selected and briefed about the event on Friday, August 16.

The Spring School is a residency and flagship programme of the Robben Island Museum which started in 1998.

“Each year, a theme is tailored to address pertinent issues affecting the youth of South Africa,” said head of marketing for the KZN Museum, Viranna Frank.

Frank said that all nine provinces in South Africa and SADC countries participate and pupils are identified by different government departments and various institutions.

“In preparation for the above, the museum hosted a speech contest on August 7 to choose five pupils who will participate in the camp,” said Frank.

The competition was open to Grade 10 and 11 History pupils from schools under the uMgungundlovu District with the topic being “To what extent has South Africa achieved its democratic dreams/aspirations in the past 25 years?”.

“We sent out invitations to schools in the district that do History at matric level, with only 23 schools responding to the invitation and only 15 schools eventually arriving for the event,” said Frank.

Pupils selected for the camp include:

• Zenzwezinhele Khumalo from Uminathi College

• Sanelesiwe Memela from KwaPatha Secondary School

• Amanda Radebe from Richmond Combined Secondary School

• Njabulo Mbili from Cool Air Secondary School

• Thobeka Mahaye from Injoloba Secondary School
