SAXOPHONIST Olajire Abayomi Olubasayo, famously known as Yommy, said after doing a musical project with an orphanage, he now has the desire to find a non-profit organisation that will allow him to teach interested children all about Jazz music.

The Golden Horse resident saxophonist explained that the motivation for this is that to him, music is a love language and the answer to most of the world’s ongoing problems.

In speaking of his musical journey, Olubasayo said it started when he was a child.

“My grandmother and her love for music is what inspired me. I learnt the basics in music on a guitar and I was then drawn to the saxophone because of its soothing sounds,” the musician said, adding that the saxophone is the main instrument he uses to express his emotions.

Although the musician emphasises that the saxophone is the only instrument that touches him deeply, he plays all kinds of music — from jazz, gospel and “sentimental” music.

Olubasayo has shared the stage with Pietermaritzburg’s very own Nomalanga Hlubi, Lira, Ringo, Naima Kay, Kunle Ayo and more.

He said that because of his urge to keep the music alive and to pass on his skills to others, he has been mentoring artist who are addicted to his kind of beat.

In attempting to raise enough money to groom future saxophonists and to get his plea heard, the musician will be hosting a ‘one night stand ‘event this Friday, February 14 on Armitage Road.

The event will feature Kenny K, Londi Mkhize, DJ Muntu, Hector, Thanda and Stewy.
