MOVING out of your family home can be an exciting yet daunting experience. Luckily, with these small-home additions, the process can be stress-free.

Whether you’re living with someone or going it alone, here are the essential household items you need to make your house a home.

• Crockery and cutlery set: Plastic take-away cutlery and plates will get you only so far in life.

Take your first step into adulthood by purchasing a simple set of cutlery and plain white plates, mugs and bowls.

• Pot and pan set: As tempting as it is to buy microwave meals and take-away meals every night of the week, it’s important you add a few nutritious meals into the mix.

A pot and pan set will ensure you’ll be able to whip up a healthy dinner with ease.

• Cooking utensils: While you’re at it, be sure to buy a basic set of cooking utensils, which includes wooden spoons, spatulas, whisks, ladles and serving spoons.

• Good-quality towels: Tatty and tired towels are never a good look, especially when you’re trying to make your adult mark on the world. Head to a towel factory store in your area to get the best price on soft, fluffy towels, and don’t forget to buy some spares for when family and friends come to visit.

• Good-quality linen: Wave goodbye to your Disney Princess bed linen and invest in a set of cotton bed sheets. This can be mixed up with different scatter cushions and bed throws as your tastes and styles change.

• Lamp or two: This may not be a necessity for everyday life, but lamps are great for emitting a cosy, warm light in the home. This can be helpful for those evenings when you’re feeling a little homesick.

Place one next to your bed and in your living room for best results.

• Kitchen bin: If you only have one bin in your home, make it a kitchen one.

Nothing looks worse than a makeshift bin made from an old plastic packet hanging from a door handle. Keep your rubbish where it’s supposed to be, in the bin!

• Can and bottle opener: For emergency wine and tinned soup situations.

• Microwave, kettle and toaster: Perfect for whipping up some quick and easy meals between classes, job interviews or social events.

• First-aid kit: This is an oft overlooked addition to any homeowner’s essentials.

Be sure to always have plasters, antiseptic, cotton swabs and plastic gloves for any accidents.

• Basic tool kit: Who needs a man when you’ve got your own tool kit to fix things? Keep a hammer, standard screw driver, a small level (for hanging pictures), measuring tape, regular pliers, wire cutter, utility knife and duct tape on hand.

• Torch and candles: With load shedding throughout our country, it’s a good idea to be prepared for blackouts.

• Curtains: A busy new life means you need to get a good night’s sleep. Ensure your room is kept dark and warm with some stylish new curtains . Depending on your budget, ensure they’re lined or have block outs for maximum darkness.
