‘My baby was dead inside me’

2019-06-12 06:02

AFTER experiencing severe stomach pains for almost 10 days, a Northdale woman was forced to go to Northdale Hospital where she was told that the cause of her stomach pains was the dead baby she was carrying.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that when she was 32 weeks pregnant she visited the clinic at Northdale Hospital where she complained that the baby was kicking and moving around, leading her to believe that she needed to give birth. She was allegedly told by a sister at the clinic not to worry and come back in two weeks time.

“After that I left but I continued to experience stomach pains until finally, on May 18, I went to the hospital where I was told that my baby girl was dead,” said the woman, who stated that, on the next day, she gave birth to her stillborn baby without much help from the staff.

The woman said that she was left to deliver the baby by herself for the most part and that, once she had given birth, she was made to lie on the same blood-stained bed that she had given birth on.

The next day she said she had to make funeral arrangements for her child and that things had not been the same in her household since this terrible experience.

“I do not even know for how long my baby was dead inside me.

“I went back to the hospital on May 28 for a clean-up,” said the woman, who plans on taking legal action against the hospital for what she claims has been a nightmarish ordeal she has been put through.

The family of the woman were similarly upset and, given that they had just mourned the one-year period of her one-year-old son, the atmosphere in their household was bleak.

Junior media liaison for the Department of Health, Khumalo Samkelisiwe, said that the matter was currently being investigated and that once the matter was clear the department would have a response ready.
