IT was a day of excitement for all attending the opening of the new Checkers in Liberty Midlands Mall.

Pietermaritzburg Mayor Themba Njilo was on hand to start off the day’s events by cutting the ribbon to symbolise the grand opening last Thursday.

Enthusiastic shoppers braved the early morning and rushed to the store hoping to be the first shoppers in Pietermaritzburg to have their pick at what specials Checkers had to offer.

Shoppers were pleasantly surprised even though the place was packed to the brim, with everyone trying to get the full experience of the new place.

Adam David, a sushi enthusiast, said that he was very impressed to see a sushi bar, describing it as an innovative step by Checkers that most grocery stores do not have. “I definitely cannot wait to try the sushi here and I feel like I will be here a lot more than I thought,” said David while he waited in line.

Valerie Baxter from Eastwood marvelled at the store, saying that it is attractive and gives off a homely vibe, especially the staff.

“The place looks lovely and the staff have been incredibly helpful. I hope they can keep it up,” said Baxter.

Another shopper, Mergan Govender, said that there is a lot of variety which is always a good thing.

“There’s wine, a fruit salad and sushi bar, a deli and so much more,” said Govender.

With the opening of the new Checkers, 120 new jobs were created, with 118 youth employed (aged between 18 and 35) out of those 120 jobs.

Branch manager Derrick dos Santos said that everything was going well on the opening day and according to plan.

“We were very happy to have the mayor here to open our store, showing how big of a deal this was for Pietermaritzburg,” said Dos Santos. “I am very proud to be part of this store and can guarantee excellence from Checkers in the future,” said Dos Santos.
