MARITZBURG United’s new coach, Muhsin Ertugral, was forced to watch on as the embattled side succumbed to yet another defeat this season, losing 2-0 to Golden Arrows on Sunday. This defeat marks their sixth of the season and sees them sitting at the bottom of the PSL table.

Having taken over from Fadlu Davids in late December, Ertugral watched on as his side conceded as early as the tenth minute, with Knox Mutizwa heading home after some superb one-touch passing from the Arrows.

Danny Venter then almost made it 2-0 immediately after the first goal, smashing a shot which looked like it was heading for the top-corner only to be denied by an excellent fingertip save by the Team of Choice goalkeeper, Richard Ofori.

Ofori kept the Arrows at bay again when, in the 22nd minute, Mutizwa failed to capitalise on an error made by United defender Brian Onyango.

Mutizwa was substituted during the break after picking up an injury and his replacement, João Moreira, came on to make an immediate impact, scoring with his first touch of the game to double the home side’s lead in the 47th minute.

Wayde Jooste was then penalised and sent off for a challenge deemed too reckless by the referee after a studs-up challenge, leaving Arrows with 10 men. Looking to take advantage of the situation, United upped the ante with promising play that ultimately lead to nothing as Deolin Mekoa saw his effort go inches over the crossbar.

Despite having an extra man for the final third of the game, Ertugral’s side were unable to make it count and get themselves back in the game. The side now finds itself languishing in a relegation position.
