New owner at Mayors Walk Spar

KEEPING it local is the aim of the new Mayors Walk Spar owner, Iain Knox, who is focussing on customer satisfaction after he took over the store this year.

Knox, born in Underberg and schooled in Pietermaritzburg at Cowan House and St Charles College, said his roots are in the city and he has a fond love for it.

His family own Underberg Spar and this, with his passion for Pietermaritzburg, ensures that he has roots in the Spar brand and is determined to cement the store’s place in the area.

Knox took over in May and began by giving the store a “much needed” clean-up and ensured that all staff became permanent. His mission was also to create a sense of community involvement.

“We support Clivia Pre-School, Sunnyside Homes and Hospice as best and whenever we can and donate our pet food to the SPCA.”

He said Spar runs “Pensioner Tuesdays” and offer pensioners tea and refreshments when they host their weekly tea party.

“We give them tea, coffee, refreshments and even soup on cold days. This has been well received by the community,” he said.

Another exciting addition to Mayors Walk Spar has been the opening of Spar Tops in September, which enables the store to cater for all customer needs, making it one stop for all.

Knox said their future plan is to “drive” the bakery, butchery, take-away and fruit and vegetable departments and ensure that a high level of customer service is available.

“Customers have been very supportive and have had positive things to say about the store. They are also happy with the increased product range of quantity and quality in-store,” said Knox.
