A 34-year-old man from Sobantu is determined to help with the lack of student accommodation inPietermaritzburg.Maxmillian Lekgatle has recently opened a student accommodation facility called Yoctochub Student Facility for Durban University of Technology (DUT) students in Scottsville. This facility started operating last month and it will accommodate 60 students. Lekgatle said that they already have 34 students that have been allocated.“This is my way of trying to deal with the accommodation problem that students are facing. I am looking at opening more of these establishments so that students will be able to study in a monitored facility,” Lekgatle said. Lekgatle said that it has always been his dream to do something that will help the people of the community that he lives in.“These students are our future they do not deserve to live in facilities that are not suitable for studying. With the shortage of student accommodation, students end up squating in one small house because they are desperate for a place to stay . Every time I saw this happening it broke my heart and I decided to take a stand and help our youth. This will be a monitored place all the time, even the visitors will be monitored. We do not want people who will come and go as they please in the student’s residence because they will disturb the students,” Lekgatle said.Lekgatle said that although he only deals with DUT students, he would like to help others from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges students. Lekgatle called on other people to also take a stand and assist students with accommodation because it takes the whole community to bring a change.
