EMBATTLED Maritzburg United’s bid to avoid relegation continued yesterday when they made a daunting trip to Mamelodi Sundowns, but defender Brian Onyango insists the team remain motivated to ensure they retain their status.

Coach Muhsin Ertugral’s charges have been in a surprising free fall this term‚ and they find themselves in a rather precarious position in the standings. But centre-back Onyango (24) maintains there is still enough self-belief in the United dressing room for them to realise their ambitions.

Speaking to The Witness this week, he said: “We have had a tough run of results this season, but we understand that it is not because we were not playing well.

“I know it can be difficult to remain focused and positive as things keep going against us, but I don’t think we should be thinking too much about relegation. We just have to remain positive and play as a team.”

United have several first-team players available again for the trip, plus “newbies” Judas Moseamedi and Thabiso Kutumela. “It’s good to have players back and some fresh faces. It’s the boost we need to get that win. I know we are all on the same page,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have appointed Ertugral’s predecessor Fadlu Davids as an assistant to first-team coaches Milutin Sredojevic and Rhulani Mokwena.

The 37-year-old tactician, who was recently sacked by the Team of Choice, replaces Benson Mhlongo at Pirates.

His brother, Mahier, has also joined the Soweto giants and will be involved in their youth structures.
