OPEN letter to Brian Boswell: Natal Zoological Gardens and Lion Park

For more than 20 years there have been protests about the conditions in which animals are kept on your premises - from concerned private citizens to the SPCA and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife - all of which you have dismissed as of no consequence.

However, the issue refuses to go away, and has again been raised by photos of tigers in cages attempting to keep cool by squeezing into pathetically small water troughs, and a very visible protest outside the gates of the zoo about the shooting dead of six tigers that escaped from these dreadful conditions onto neighbouring farmlands.

Your claim that these animals are well fed, and that such confinement is not illegal, ignores all ethical, animal-rights considerations that call for the recognition of all mammals as sentient beings.

You apparently scorn the link between human and animal rights - that all exploitation and abuse of living creatures are inextricably interconnected.

Animals must be granted the basic requirements of being able to live free from maltreatment and suffering.

Trafficking in animals involves unacceptable violence, driven by a desire for financial gain, treating animals as merchandise.

Please do the right thing and close this awful facility, sending all these creatures to live out their lives in peaceful, stress-free comfort at wildlife sanctuaries.
