Organisers create new trail routes for ‘Witness’ marathon

2018-01-24 06:01

TO make The Witness Medihelp Maritzburg City Marathon even more popular, organisers are again offering trail runs to those not keen on the main event next month.

Lynton Kynloch, an avid trail runner and enthusiastic organiser, has devised new routes for the seven kilometre and 16 km trails, which are not too technical and will suit novices as well as regular trail runners.

Entrants will receive T-shirts and there are medals and small cash prizes for the first, second and third men and women in each event available, according to race director John Hall.

The marathon takes place on Sunday, February 25, while the trail runs are set for 7.30 am the previous day and cut off at 10 am.

Timing will be done by chip and times will be recorded mat to mat.

Participants may enter the 16 km and cut off at seven kilometre, but only 16 km entrants will be allowed to continue for the second loop of the “figure 8” course.

“Entries for the two distances of the trail will, for safety and environmental reasons, be limited to the first 300 per event,” stressed Hall.

Entry for the seven kilometre is R100 and the 16 km is R130.

Entries made before February 1 entitle the participant to a free race T-shirt at registration.

After February 1, the price remains the same, but no free shirt is handed out, while medals go to all official finishers.

Locally, pre-entries can be handed in at Poobie Naidoo Sports in Boshoff Street or on the web at www. pmb42.co.za
