‘Oribi Road is embarrassing and a disgrace’

2019-04-03 06:01

A FORMER employee of the Town Planning Council has labelled the state of the entrance to Oribi Village “a complete disgrace”.

Wanting to remain anonymous, the source was part of the Town Planning Council before retiring.

“There is no form of maintenance on Oribi Road. The grass is left to grow to lengthy heights while dumping takes place daily,” said the source.

The source also claims that it was an utter embarrassment for the people of Pietermaritzburg (PMB) and those from outside of PMB when the Maritzburg Marathon took place with part of the marathon going past Oribi Road.

“The people who participated in that marathon saw first-hand how filthy and unkempt the place is.

“As residents of this city, we should feel ashamed to host events like these that showcase our filthy city,” said the source.

Dawn Botha, a nearby resident to Oribi Road, said that the people of Oribi had given up on the state of their road, stating that it has been that way for a while now.

“This area has been forgotten by our municipality because it is away from view, being situated so far from the business hub,”

“We live in this squalor because we have been neglected by our government,” said Botha. Upon doing an inspection of their own in the area, the Maritzburg Fever saw that burned out and dilapidated buildings have been left to stand, while large fields remain uncut, attributing to the mess. People have also now taken to dumping in the tall grass.

Ward 24 councillor Prudence Nokuthula Msimang said that she had logged various complaints with Human Settlements, who deal with the area, regarding uncut grass and various other issues and that now they had to wait for the department to procure the services of someone to deal with the area. Thobeka Mafumbatha, spokesperson for the municipality did not respond to a media query sent by Maritzburg Fever.
