WITH only 50 000 votes out of 14.5 million, separating the top two in Idols South Africa season 12, Pietermaritzburg’s Noma Khumalo, was announced the winner. The city erupted as Khumalo was announced the winner with people taking to social media expressing the delight and excitement that she had won.

Khumalo, who burst into tears as the announcement was made, was engulfed with hugs and kisses from her fellow Idols SA contestants as she took to the stage to sing her first single, Want It To Feel Like It Did With You.

Last Thursday Msunduzi Municipality and the UMgungundlovu District Municipality hosted a concert at Carabineers Garden where artists took to the stage, including Khumalo’s band mates Acoustic Assassins.

Hordes of people attended the event, wearing T-shirts with Khumalo’s face on and voting details. There was also free WiFi for people to vote for their local favourite.

Mayor Themba Njilo also took to the stage singing and dancing while encouraging people to vote for Khumalo.

Both finalists (other finalist was Thami Shobede) were from KwaZulu-Natal. Khumalo broke the cycle of male winners and is the first female to be crowned since 2009.

She is only the second winner from Pietermaritzburg with Vincent Bones taking the title in 2014.

Posting a video of the announcement on her Facebook page, Khumalo captioned it, “That moment my life changed 4EVER! Thank you so so so much Mzansi!”

With over 82 000 likes on her Facebook page, Khumalo’s followers took to her page with congratulatory wishes throughout the night.

“No tears, no words or letters can describe how I feel inside. To come this far has not only been my journey alone, but a journey I have took (sic) with each and every one of you. Week in week out as you sat and watched me perform, to the endless voting, I have not been alone, I had you.”

“I am here today just to say Thank You. Thank you for not giving up on me, and the endless love and support,” read another one of Khumalo’s posts before the announcement on Sunday night.
